The Nelson Mandela University Music and Performing Arts Department provides learners with individual attention from highly-skilled staff and offers a wide variety of courses, from Western classical music to jazz to music technology. A full range of instruments is taught.

The facilities are among the most modern in South Africa and include a well-equipped library, lecture halls and practice rooms, digital recording studios, and four pipe organs, including the largest organ used for tuition in the country. The Department of Music plays an active role in Gqeberha'slively cultural scene and performance opportunities include student and staff concerts, the Nelson Mandela University Brass Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, and String Ensemble, the acclaimed Nelson Mandela University Choir, and the East Cape Philharmonic Orchestra.
