Post Graduate programmes offered by the Nelson Mandela University Music and Performing Arts Department provides opportunity for further specialization in a number of fields.

The Masters in Music (Research) degree comprises a dissertation on an approved topic in any field of musical scholarship, including musicology, ethnomusicology, music technology, and music education. The minimum duration of this qualification is one year full-time study. Prospective candidates must comply with the admission requirements for this particular qualification as set out in the Faculty of Arts Prospectus and a draft research proposal must accompany the application.

The Masters in Choral Conducting (Coursework) degree comprises three equally-weighted modules: two approved creative outputs (choral recitals) and a research treatise. The minimum duration of this qualification is two years full-time study. Prospective candidates must comply with the admission requirements for this particular qualification as set out in the Faculty of Arts Prospectus and a draft research proposal must accompany the application.

The Masters in Performing Arts (Coursework) degree comprises three equally-weighted modules: two approved creative outputs (solo performances) and a research treatise. The minimum duration of this qualification is two years full-time study. Prospective candidates must comply with the admission requirements for this particular qualification as set out in the Faculty of Arts Prospectus and a draft research proposal must accompany the application.

The Masters in Composition (Coursework) degree comprises two modules: an approved portfolio of creative outputs (original compositions), carrying two-thirds weighting in the degree, and a research treatise, carrying a one-third weighting in the degree. The minimum duration of this qualification is one year full-time study. Prospective candidates must comply with the admission requirements for this particular qualification as set out in the Faculty of Arts Prospectus and a draft research proposal must accompany the application.

The D.Phil degree comprises a thesis that offers a substantial contribution to new knowledge on an approved topic in any field of musical scholarship, including musicology, ethnomusicology, music technology, and music education. The minimum duration of this qualification is two years full-time study. Prospective candidates must comply with the admission requirements for this particular qualification as set out in the Faculty of Arts Prospectus and a comprehensive research proposal must accompany the application.

The D.Mus degree focusses on the discursive arena between creative outputs and scholarship, and comprises two options:

Performance and Composition.

Both these programmes are currently undergoing recurriculation and no new intakes for 2018.
